GSX-R1000 deemed inadequate, turbocharged
Mick Hodge of Sydney, Australia, has always had a taste for great power. Great responsibility, however, is arguably not his strong point. Disgusted at the trade-in price it would cost to upgrade his K6 Gixxer to a K7, he decided to spend the money (and then some) on turbo-charging his existing 300km/h, 180 horsepower missile.
With the help of well-renowned tinkerers S&R Pro, he’s created a 245 horsepower monster of a thing that “pulls in fourth like a stock one does in first” and delivers about three times the torque of the stock bike.
This is hardly unique - but apart from streaming forth at a rapidly approaching horizon, tears of joy in his eyes, what Mick likes more than anything else is to belt around corners at high speed - so, against the advice of the experts, he’s left the stock swingarm unextended. Unsurprisingly, this has made the front end a touch lofty - unexpected power wheelies in fourth gear now make the proud owner giggle like a madman, and he’s found you can “provoke it” into a fifth gear mono if you want as well.
For a bike packing genuine MotoGP power figures, as well as the excellent handling the K6 GSX-R was already renowned for, it’s surprisingly stealthy. In fact, were it not for the small S&R Pro stickers and anonymously protruding air filter, you’d need to look very closely to tell it apart from a stocker.
