Doug Domokos, the Wheelie King of the 1980s

We love a good wheelie here at TheBikerGene, and this Michigan-born stunt god of the 70s and 80s was a true pioneer of the art. Doug Domokos was professionally known as “The Wheelie King” as he travelled the world with his stunt show - but he’ll be best remembered for the big event stunts he performed.

Like the time he set the world record for the longest wheelie - at 145 miles long. Or the time he passed the Georgia State motorcycle license test on one wheel. Or the time he pulled the “world’s tallest wheelie” - five laps around the roof of the Empire State Building in New York. Or the time when he wheelied a quad bike with no less than 11 passengers on board.

Then there was the time he visited Anaheim and won a $10,000 bet by wheelying an entire lap of the supercross track, bumps, jumps and all:

And the time he wheelied up the famous Lombard Street in San Francisco, despite its huge gradient and several consecutive 180-degree turns - then did a few laps of a tram at the top and wheelied right back down again:

If traffic was annoying him, he would frequently wheelie up and over the top of cars. I might try that.

Domokos died in an ultralight aircraft in November 2000, leaving behind his son Nikolas, fiancee Michelle and a list of accomplishments as long as your arm. A DVD has been put together of some of his finer feats, available from The Wheelie King Website.
